HIMstrata's Bring Your Child to Work Day Finds Children More Interested in Susan Than Company's Famous Automation
HIMstrata's annual Bring Your Child to Work Day took an unexpected turn Thursday when visiting children showed considerably more interest in the billing department's employees than in its award-winning automation.
Organizers had scheduled a special presentation introducing Kevin, the company's celebrated claims-processing script, as an example of the exciting future of healthcare operations.
Executive Vice President Craig Haddock described Kevin's productivity, leadership potential, and unusually strong attendance record to an audience of 19 children.
One child asked whether Kevin could play Minecraft.
Developer Marcus Lee said he could not.
Another asked why Kevin needed a trophy if he wasn't a person.
Haddock explained that the company believed excellence deserved recognition in all its forms.
The children were then taken to meet Senior Revenue Specialist Susan Sprigs, who demonstrated how a claim moves through a billing office using fictional patient records prepared for the visit.
Several children became interested in finding deliberately planted errors.
One correctly identified a missing number. Another asked whether the company gave trophies to the people who fixed them.
Susan said sometimes.
Marcus joined the activity and showed the children how a simple correction could change what the program did with a practice claim.
By the end of the visit, the children had requested additional examples and asked whether they could make their own pretend claims.
Haddock called the day a success, praising Kevin for inspiring curiosity about the company's work.
An informal poll conducted by the visitors identified Susan's demonstration as the most popular activity.
The office label maker finished second.
Kevin finished fourth, behind the vending machine.
