BEYOND THE FOUNDATIONS
Some revenue cycle questions don't fit neatly into a foundational guide. They might begin with an unusual payment adjustment, an unfamiliar coding reference, a new tool, or the discovery that a familiar billing process works differently in another specialty.
Specialized Topics & Deep Dives gives me room to follow those subjects a little further. You'll find investigations, practical walkthroughs, comparisons, technical explanations, and useful references. Some articles work through problems that remain unresolved; others explore something interesting or valuable in its own right.
The collection is organized into four sections. Each article appears in one primary section, even when its subject crosses several departments or specialties.
Investigative Deep Dives
Some questions start with a result that doesn't quite make sense. These articles examine reimbursement discrepancies, unusual remittance activity, payer behavior, system rules, financial controls, and other situations that deserve careful investigation.
The focus is on what can be established from the evidence, what remains uncertain, and which details or questions could help explain what happened. A documented solution isn't required for the investigation to be useful.
Applied Workflows & Examples
A closer look at the work itself, from claim and remittance transactions to coding, adjustments, payment allocation, reconciliation, and reimbursement calculations. These articles work through specific processes and examples rather than repeating broad introductions.
Walkthroughs may include realistic fictional or appropriately de-identified records, comparisons, calculations, and practical steps that make unfamiliar situations easier to follow.
Across Departments & Specialties
Revenue cycle processes can look different depending on the department, care setting, or billing specialty. This section explores those differences and the connections among patient access, coding, billing, payment posting, follow-up, and other functions.
Some articles trace issues across handoffs and systems. Others compare specialties or examine how different teams approach similar work, including situations where nothing has gone wrong.
Tools, Guides & Reference Materials
Certain subjects deserve their own focused explanation, whether it's a CMS job aid, a coding reference, a specialized transaction, an operational tool, or a less familiar billing rule.
These articles explain what a resource or concept is, how it can be used, and which details deserve attention. Official guidance and technical requirements are presented in their applicable context.
There's room here for difficult questions, useful discoveries, and subjects that simply invite a closer look. New articles and references will be added as the collection grows.
